To honor and recognize Juneteenth On the Ave.as a vital cultural and educational event

WHEREAS, Juneteenth, now recognized as a federal holiday, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, marking the true end of chattel slavery in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and enduring contributions of African Americans to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our nation; and

 

WHEREAS, Juneteenth On the Ave. serves as a vibrant community celebration and educational platform, dedicated to acknowledging our shared history, honoring the struggles and triumphs of the past, and inspiring continued action toward freedom, equity, and justice; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of Juneteenth On the Ave. is to use this nationally recognized holiday to unite people through celebration, cultural expression, and education, fostering a deeper understanding of our history while uplifting the voices and creativity of the community; and

 

WHEREAS, this event provides an opportunity for all people to come together in the spirit of unity, reflection, and joy, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to guide our collective future; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we honor and recognize Juneteenth On the Ave. as a vital cultural and educational event that enriches our community, preserves our history, and inspires ongoing commitment to freedom and equality for all; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS, that we encourage all residents, organizations, and institutions to participate in and support Juneteenth On the Ave. and to carry forward its mission of celebration, cultural expression, and education throughout the year.
