To recognize September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and to commend the efforts of the Central Ohio Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
 
Body
 
WHEREAS, ovarian cancer ranks as the fifth cause of cancer death in women. An estimated 22,430 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in this country in 2007, and about 15, 280 women will die this year because of the disease; and
 
WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is treatable when detected early, before it has spread beyond the ovaries, and at this stage the 5 year survival rate can be 95%; and
 
WHEREAS, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and its chapters work throughout the year to promote patient, public, and professional education, peer-to-peer emotional support, and advocacy and awareness efforts; and
 
WHEREAS, increased awareness of the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer will enhance chances of early detection  and survival from the disease; and
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and its Central Ohio Chapter is to raise awareness and promote education about ovarian cancer. The Coalition is committed to improving the survival rate and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does herby recognize September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does urge all members of the community to become educated about the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer.
