Congratulating the Columbus Board of Education and Superintendent Gene T. Harris on the landmark results by students of the Columbus Public Schools on the State Report Card.



Body
WHEREAS, all Ohio schools districts are subject to a series of academic standards they must meet or exceed, and which are presented publicly as an annual Report Card by the Ohio Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, on the most recent State Report Card for the Columbus Public Schools, the district met seven of the 22 standards moving it up to the category of Academic Watch; and

WHEREAS, after two years as Superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, Dr. Harris has achieved her goal of removing Columbus Public Schools from the Academdic Emergency category; and

WHEREAS, the Columbus Board of Education, led by President Stephanie Hightower, and Dr. Harris have committed to increasing academic improvement by the adoption of such innovations as an eight-week Proficiency Institute led by Columbus school teachers and the use of an automated phone contact system that reminds parents of the importance of their children being in school each day; and

WHEREAS, the district has exceeded state standards for sixth-grade writing, ninth-grade reading and writing, tenth-grade reading and citizenship and overall attendance; and

WHEREAS, Columbus Public Schools is progressing in its goal to attain a 90 percent graduation rate for its students within the next seven to 10 years,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

Section 1. Congratulates Board of Education membes Jeff Cabot, Betty Drummond, Andrew Ginther, Loretta Heard, Stephanie Hightower, Bill Moss and Karen Schwarzwalder for their leadership and dedication to the education of all Columbus schoolchildren.
