To Recognize Teckie Shackelford and Congratulate her on her Retirement from I Know I Can

WHEREAS, Teckie Shackelford is renown across our great City of Columbus and the State of Ohio for her philanthropy, leadership and passion for serving young people and encouraging them to pursue higher education; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, she took her talents for guiding students toward college into a successful educational counseling business, School Selection Counseling; and
WHEREAS, along with Robert Weiler, Arthur Kobacker, and Cliff Tyree Sr, Teckie founded I Know I Can in 1988, with a mission to inspire, enable and support Columbus students on a path to college; and
WHEREAS, I Know I Can is a proven success partnering across many institutions of higher education and linking high school students to opportunities to reach their great potential; and
WHEREAS, the IKIC program affects thousands of young people across our state, and recently became a huge new inspiration to Columbus City School Students with The Columbus Promise’s work with I Know I Can to advance hundreds of students each year from City Schools to Columbus State Community College; and
WHEREAS, Teckie is retiring from her board role at I Know I Can; and
WHEREAS, the honors and awards Teckie earned over her many years of service would fill several rooms in City Hall, Columbus City Council hopes that our gratitude still resonates, because she is a model of the kind of public servant who changes lives; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council recognizes today, November 12, 2024 as Teckie Shackelford day in Columbus and we encourage all to join us in honoring her for a lifetime of service.
