Explanation

Title

To Recognize the Ride of Silence and to declare Wednesday, May 18, 2005 as a day of remembrance for all bicyclists killed or injured by motorists in Ohio.

Body

WHEREAS on Wednesday, May 18, 2005, Columbus bicyclists will participate in the national Ride of Silence, a silent, slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on America's roadways; and

WHEREAS the purpose of the Ride of Silence is to remember and mourn those killed by motorists; to raise awareness that our community has a large population of cyclists; and to remind the motoring public that bicyclists have the same rights as cars and that those rights must be respected; and

WHEREAS one of every 54 fatal car crashes involves the death of a bicyclist; and

WHEREAS it is local and federal policy that bicyclists be accommodated on all our nation's transportation facilities and be mainstreamed into our transportation system; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

That this Council remembers those cyclists who have been killed or injured by motorists in Ohio and across the country and recognizes the need for cyclists and motorists to share our roadways with consideration and civility.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Wednesday, May 18, 2005 is hereby declared a day of remembrance for all bicyclists killed or injured by motorists in Ohio.
