To recognize May 2024 as Bike Month and honor the Black Girls Do Bike for their dedication to the health and wellness of women of color through cycling.

 

WHEREAS, Thousands of Columbus residents will experience the joys of cycling during May and throughout the year via bike education programs, commuting, racing or recreational riding; and

 

WHEREAS, the city of Columbus will host “Bike to Work Day” on the 23rd of May, 2024

 

WHEREAS, the Central Ohio Greenways & Ohio to Erie trail network attracts hundreds of thousands of cyclists from all over the United States to the benefit of the Central Ohio region; and

 

WHEREAS, bicycling has been shown to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life, providing massive economic benefits for the city of Columbus by encouraging residents and tourists to explore and shop local while reducing pollution, congestion and traffic safety concerns; and

 

WHEREAS, Black Girls Do Bike is committed to promoting the bicycle as a means of reliable, safe, effective transportation, recreation and as a tool for wellness among women of color and marginalized communities alike; and

 

WHEREAS, Black Girls Do Bike inspires young girls and women of color to see cycling as attainable; and

 

WHEREAS, Black Girls Do Bike and the city of Columbus promote greater awareness of bicycle operation and road safety education for cyclists and motorist throughout the month of May and year-round; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the month of May 2024 as Bike Month and applaud the Columbus, Ohio Chapter of Black Girls do Bike for their commitment to a safer, healthier and more bike friendly Columbus.
