To Recognize and Celebrate the 170th Anniversary of Clintonville and its Contributions to the City of Columbus

WHEREAS, Clintonville was first settled by Thomas Bull and his family in 1812, who attracted more settlers to the area by building houses for newcomers on their 600 acres of land; as the area grew, the community got its own post office in 1847, the year Clintonville was established; and
WHEREAS, the roads and buildings of Clintonville contain decades of history, with streets named after original settlers, churches established in the early 1900s, and homes built post-World War II; the first school in Clintonville built in the early 1800s was a single room, and since then the school system has continued to grow, building several elementary, middle, and high schools; and
WHEREAS, Clintonville was home to many of Columbus’ greatest attractions including the first Columbus Zoo established in 1905, and Olentangy Park, now Olentangy Village Apartment Complex, originally an amusement park established in the late 1800s, holding the title of largest amusement park in the United States through the early 1900s; and
WHEREAS, Clintonville is the home of Whetstone Park and the Columbus Park of Roses, beautiful areas that attract Columbus residents and visitors alike. These parks are perfect for many events from picnics to weddings to festivals, including the annual Rose Festival; and
WHEREAS, Clintonville continues to thrive with approximately 30,000 residents, and receives continued support from Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the 170th Anniversary of Clintonville and contributions to the City of Columbus on this date, September 16, 2017.
