To Recognize the Merry Makers Club, Inc. on its Centennial Anniversary
Body
WHEREAS, the Merry Makers Club was founded in 1926 by a group of young black men attending Columbus East High School, at a time when Black students faced segregation and exclusion, and the Club was created as a place of fellowship, dignity, and community for Black men; and
WHEREAS, for nearly one hundred years, the Merry Makers Club has contributed to the social fabric of Columbus through fellowship, leadership development, civic engagement, and service-reflecting a legacy of resilience, excellence, and commitment to community; and
WHEREAS, the year 2026 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Merry Makers Club, Inc., a milestone worthy of recognition by the City of Columbus and its residents; and
WHEREAS, the Merry Makers Club Foundation of Columbus, Inc., the Club’s philanthropic arm, advances educational opportunity and community uplift through scholarship support and related initiatives; and
WHEREAS, the Foundation’s “March to a Million” Scholarship Campaign represents a significant commitment to educational equity and opportunity-mobilizing members, supporters, and community partners to expand scholarship impact for deserving students; and
WHEREAS, the Merry Makers Club and Foundation will commemorate their Centennial with celebratory and community-building activities throughout 2026, including a Centennial Gala and related events that honor the Club’s history while investing in the next generation; and
WHEREAS, the City of Columbus recognizes the importance of longstanding civic and community institutions that have expanded opportunity, strengthened neighborhoods, and helped shape the story of Columbus across generations; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That Columbus City Council hereby recognizes and celebrates the Merry Makers Club, Inc. on its Centennial Anniversary (1926-2026), and commends the Club for one hundred years of fellowship,...
