To honor, recognize and celebrate the Life of Tawnya Salyer

WHEREAS, Tawnya Jo Salyer, age 27, an apprentice pipefitter with the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 189, who lost her life during construction of the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in Columbus, Ohio.; and
WHEREAS, Tawnya was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, fiancée, and colleague. She was the first female apprentice in the United Association pipe trades to be fatally injured on the job in the United States. Her sacrifice will not be forgotten and led to improved safety regulations within the construction industry.; and
WHEREAS, representative Mark Johnson worked with Ms. Salyer’s surviving family to design a bronze bust of her likeness on a marble platform. A plaque on the statue will honor Ms. Salyer’s work ethic as one of the first women in her profession while shining a light on work-site safety improvements instituted as a result of her death.; and
WHEREAS, Tawnya Salyer represented the very best of Ohio, it is only right and fitting for us to honor the person who gave their life for this building.; and
WHEREAS, May Ohioans remember Tawnya Salyer and all trades people who have lost their lives performing the essential yet dangerous work of building our state. May lawmakers remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting the safety and dignity of those in the skilled building trades.; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of Tawnya Salyer.
