To Express Support for H.R. 1280 and Urge the U.S. Senate to Pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

 

 

 

Body

 

WHEREAS,                      Columbus City Council supports H.R. 1280, known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, and urging its passage by the U.S. Senate; and

 

WHEREAS,                      H.R. 1280 proposes to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, restrict the use of certain police practices, enhance transparency and data collection, establish best practices and training requirements, and further enhances existing enforcement mechanisms to remedy violations by law enforcement by lowering the criminal intent standard, limiting qualified immunity, granting administrative subpoena power to the Department of Justice, and creating a national registry to compile data on complaints and records of police misconduct; and

 

WHEREAS,                      the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1280, known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, on March 4, 2021 and it is now before the U.S. Senate for consideration; and

 

WHEREAS,                      H.R. 1280 was preceded by a series of protests against the deaths of African Americans, including the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota and Breonna Taylor in Kentucky; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Columbus City Council desires to express its support for H.R. 1280 and urge the U.S. Senate to pass H.R. 1280; therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby expresses support for H.R. 1280 for the immediate preservation of public peace, health, safety, and welfare of its residents.
