To congratulate and pay tribute to the 2006 class of the first annual Honoring Our Elders program.

WHEREAS, Judy Barker, Judge Robert M. Duncan, Dr. Frank Hale, Jr., Jerry Hammond, Clarence Lumpkin, Amos Lynch, Bill Willis, Rev. Leon L Troy, Sr., Ann B. Walker, Dr. Wilburn H. Weddington, Catherine T. Willis, and Les Wright are being honored because you opened doors, tore down barriers and paved the way for us; and
WHEREAS, we speak the names of our honored elders who made tremendous contributions to our communities and provided outstanding leadership in the areas of business, law, education, public service, community activism, communication, sports, religion, healthcare, and the arts; and
WHEREAS, we know that we are walking in footprints made deep by the confident strides of people who parted the air before them like the forces of nature that you are; and
WHEREAS, we honor you here today because we know that we stand on your shoulders as you have stood on the shoulders of our ancestors and they stood on the shoulders their ancestors before them; and
WHEREAS, our honorees are strong, courageous and wise people born from strong, courageous and wise people and we celebrate your strength, courage and wisdom; and
WHEREAS, you taught us that the search is always for the truth and that when people show us who they are, we should believe them; and
WHEREAS, we are here because of the way you made for us. Because of the prayers you prayed for us. We are the ones you conjured up, hoping we would have strength enough, and discipline enough, and talent enough, and nerve enough to step into the light when it turned in our direction; and
WHEREAS, we are the ones you hoped would make you proud because all of our hard work makes all of yours part of something better, truer, deeper. Something that lights the way ahead like a lamp unto our feet, as steady as the unforgettable beat of our collective heart; now, therefore
