To honor the meaningful work of the Ohio Environmental Council and celebrate its 2026 Green Gala.


Body

WHEREAS, the Ohio Environmental Council is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environment and health of all Ohio communities through advocacy, decision-maker accountability, and civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, the Ohio Environmental Council was founded in 1969, following the Cuyahoga River Fire, by a group of environmental advocates who wanted to protect Ohio’s environment; and

WHEREAS, the Ohio Environmental Council works in every corner of the state, ensuring that all Ohioans are included in the fight for environmental justice and sustainability; and

WHEREAS, the Ohio Environmental Council has engaged meaningfully with Columbus City Council on a variety of issues, providing testimony at numerous public hearings and Council meetings; and

WHEREAS, on May 9, 2026, the Ohio Environmental Council will celebrate its annual Green Gala, an unforgettable celebration in honor of Ohio’s environmental champions and the hopeful vision for a healthier, more resilient future; and

WHEREAS, the theme of the 2026 Green Gala is Hope in Action, celebrating the determination and perseverance necessary to address the urgent environmental challenges facing our state today. The Green Gala will honor the advocates, leaders, and community members who not only envision a healthier future for Ohio, but also take meaningful actions to turn that vision into reality; and

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus, through its Sustainable Columbus office, is committed to imparting equity and environmental justice through strong climate action and is guided by the Columbus Climate Action Plan, which has a community-wide goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and 45% reduction in emissions by 2050; and
