To endorse Issue 47 and support the South-Western City School District Operating Levy.
Body
WHEREAS, it is the obligation of the City of Columbus to protect and promote the health, safety and welfare of the community; and
WHEREAS, a healthy education system is critical to the economic stability and success of the Columbus region; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District is the sixth largest school district in the State of Ohio and the second largest in Franklin County; and
WHEREAS, of the more than 21,000 students in the South-Western City School District, more than one-third reside in the City of Columbus; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District Board of Education and administration have diligently implemented a five-year budget plan; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District Board of Education has reduced the budget by more than $22 million and 350 positions over the last three years; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District Board of Education and administration have kept the promises they made to make the 2005 levy last three years; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District has a demonstrated need for operating finances to maintain quality educational services and programs in the community; and
WHEREAS, the South-Western City School District Board of Education has placed a 7.4 mill operating levy on the November 3, 2009 ballot that will reinstate high school and expanded walk zone busing, extra-curricular activities, athletics, clubs, and before- and after-school programs; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby endorse Issue 47 and encourages the residents of the South-Western City School District to support our youth and the future of Columbus by voting FOR Issue 47 on November 3.
