To Recognize and Congratulate Judge Michael C. Mentel as the Recipient of The Shamrock Club Member of the Year
Body
WHEREAS, the Shamrock Club of Columbus was established in 1936 to encourage awareness and appreciation of Irish culture, history, and traditions, and the Member of the Year award is given annually to recognize a member for their outstanding contributions to the club and community; and
WHEREAS, Judge Mentel, a proud graduate of THE Bishop Ready High School, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Capital University and his Juris Doctor from the Capital University School of Law, before furthering his legal education at the prestigious Trinity College Law School in Dublin, Ireland; and
WHEREAS, Judge Michael C. Mentel is a proud resident of the City of Columbus, serving 12 years on the Columbus City Council, including 4 years as Council President, and is currently serving as Ohio Appellate Court Judge; and
WHEREAS, Judge Mentel has demonstrated a deep commitment to Irish historical scholarship and justice, authoring the book The 1981 Irish Hunger Strike: An Account from Declassified British Documents, critically examining the impact of one of the most tragic events in Irish history, shedding light on the sacrifices of the involved men and the lasting political changes that paved the way for the Good Friday Agreement; and
WHEREAS, Judge Mentel has been an active member of the Shamrock Club for 40 years, and his family has been active in the club for over 80 years, dedicating their time and service across generations to the betterment of the organization; and
WHEREAS, the city of Columbus has a large and proud Irish community and values the countless contributions they have made to the economy, culture, and community of the city; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council hereby celebrates and congratulate Judge Michael C. Mentel as the recipient of the Shamrock Club Member of the Year.
