To observe National Gun Awareness Day on June 7th and recognize Orange Hearts for Makenzi for their mission and community service

WHEREAS, the #WearOrange Campaign and National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed on June 7th to honor the death of 15 year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed by a stray bullet in Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, about 41% of Columbus residents live within a quarter mile of a recent fatal shooting; and,
WHEREAS, there were 148 deaths from gun violence in 2023, the third highest in the history of the City of Columbus; and,
WHEREAS, the non-profit organization Orange Hearts for Makenzi operates in the memory and spirit of Makenzi Ridley, a Columbus youth and dedicated entrepreneur whose life was tragically taken at just 17 years old by gun violence on June 24,
2021; and,
WHEREAS, Orange Hearts for Makenzi is dedicated to providing young, aspiring entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds with resources and assistance to pursue their dreams; and,
WHEREAS, entrepreneurship provides unique paths to success and financial stability for Columbus youth; and
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THIS COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: Celebrates and honors the goals of Orange Hearts for Makenzi and stands with the families of gun violence victims.
