Body

WHEREAS, the mission of the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging is to plan, coordinate and advocate for the development and delivery of services for older adults, families and the community; and

WHEREAS, the Senior Citizen Services Levy has benefited the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging since its passage in 1992; and

WHEREAS, the Senior Citizen Services Levy is a critical component, along with the Medicaid PASSPORT program, in keeping Franklin County older adults at home by providing needed services such as home delivered meals, personal care, medical transportation, emergency response systems, respite care, and minor home repairs; and

WHEREAS, the failure of the Senior Citizen Services Levy would mean a loss of over 498,000 home delivered meals, over 1,000,000 miles of transportation, over 19,000 days of adult day health care, over 95,000 hours of light housekeeping, over 21,000 hours of assistance with bathing and hair washing, and over 50,000 hours of relief for family caregivers; and

WHEREAS, the Senior Citizen Services Levy is a $ .90 million levy, which will cost the homeowner of a $100,000 home $27.56 a year or about 7.5 cents a day; and

WHEREAS, there is a growing need for home and community-based care services that enable older residents to remain independent as over 40,000 Franklin County residents age 60 and older need help with routine daily tasks like bathing, cooking and cleaning; and

WHEREAS, passage of Issue 14 on the November 6 ballot will allow for the renewal of the Senior Citizen Services Levy which is vital for the well-being of the older citizens of Columbus; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That the Columbus City Council strongly encourages citizens to support Issue 14, the Senior Citizen Services Levy, on the November 6, 2007 ballot.
