Explanation

BACKGROUND:
Need. To authorize and direct the Director of Public Safety to enter into contract with Metropolitan Towing and Storage for the Division of Police. This contract is for the service to the City for the towing of vehicles from the City streets as requested by the Division of Police.

BID INFORMATION: The bid for the towing of vehicles from the city streets was held on August 15, 2001. Metropolitan Towing and Storage was the only bidder. The original contract allows for a two-year renewal option and the City wishes to exercise the second year renewal provision.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION: Emergency legislation is necessary due to the current contract will expire as of August 31, 2003.

FISCAL IMPACT:
A balance of $601,846.00 is available in the Division's General Fund Budget for towing services through the end of 2003. Since funds are only available for four months, additional funding will have to be added for the remaining eight months in next year's budget. This additional funding need for 2004 will be determined by the Department of Public Safety, certified by the City Auditor, and approved by City Council. The City reserves the right to increase or decrease service based on need.
