Explanation

This ordinance authorizes the Director of the Recreation and Parks Department to enter into a contract with Franklin County Historical Society, dba Center of Science and Industry for the summer 2025. This ordinance will authorize the expenditure of $60,000.00.

CRPD offers a variety of Summer Camps each year, with varying themes. Campers experience many activities including but not limited to: arts, crafts, sports, games, nature exploration and science experiments. This ordinance will allow CRPD to enhance our summer science exploration by collaborating with COSI. Additionally, this ordinance with allow further science exploration for our afterschool programming throughout the school year.

Community Input/Issues: Statistics shows that science offers a powerful platform for building confidence, developing communication skills, and making sense of the world around us a world that is increasingly shaped by science and technology. Furthermore, there are individual benefits to learning science, such as developing our ability to ask questions, collect information, organize and test our ideas, solve problems, and apply what we learn. CRPD is exposing young campers in a fun and engaging way, with the goal of developing interest and remove intimidation of the subject.

Area(s) Affected: All community center camp locations of the City of Columbus, Ohio, ages 6-12.

Master Plan: This project will support the mission of the Recreation and Parks Department by connecting our community through recreational resources that enhance quality of life.

Fiscal Impact: $60,000.00 is budgeted and available from the Recreation and Parks Operating Fund 2285 to meet the financial obligations of this contract.
