Title

To honor the service and advocacy work of Rupert “Twink” Starr as an LGBTQ+ veteran in the community.

Body

WHEREAS, the late Rupert “Twink” Starr, born in 1922, served as a soldier in World War II with distinction in the Battle of the Bulge; and,

WHEREAS, upon returning home, Starr dedicated himself to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in his community; and,

WHEREAS, Rupert Starr played a crucial role in the fight to repeal the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy, which historically prevented LGBTQ+ individuals from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Forces; and,

WHEREAS, Starr co-founded the Gay Activists Alliance, and was instrumental in establishing Stonewall Columbus, helping to organize early Columbus Pride events, and being honored as the Grand Marshal of the Pride Parade in 2009; and,

WHEREAS, Rupert “Twink” Starr’s unwavering commitment to both his country and to the LGBTQ+ community symbolized true resiliency and dedication; and,

WHEREAS, Starr’s trailblazing legacy will live on, inspiring future generations in our city and across the country; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council proclaims, recognizes, and celebrates the service and advocacy work of the late Rupert “Twink” Starr.
