To recognize Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, on the occasion of its 2011 Great Lakes Regional Conference, and to welcome conference attendees to Columbus.
Body
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at Howard University in 1908 and is the first Greek letter organization founded by African American women; and
WHEREAS, the sorority's mission is "Service to All Mankind," and it has fulfilled that mission since 1908 with programming and services to advance education, health, economic empowerment, and the arts; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha's 2011 Great Lakes Regional Conference will be held in Columbus from April 26th through May 11th; and
WHEREAS, the conference is hosted by the over two hundred members of the Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, which has served the Columbus community since 1930, and also by the undergraduate members of Theta Chapter and Pi Gamma Chapter; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha and its local chapters have had a positive impact in our community through their Emerging Young Leaders Initiative, Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Initiative, Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative, and other important efforts; and
WHEREAS, Columbus is proud to host the 2011 Great Lakes Regional Conference and its attendees, who will come from Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western New York to visit our city and continue their proud tradition of service to all mankind; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
