To congratulate Vester Newsome, recipient of the 2006 George Meany Award, recognizing outstanding volunteer service to the Columbus community.
Body
WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards Banquet, the largest labor recognition of its kind in the country, is a night for the Central Ohio AFL-CIO and the United Way Community Services Department to recognize local business and labor leaders who have given outstanding volunteer service to the community; and
 
WHEREAS, the George Meany Award, named after the late George Meany, former President of the national AFL-CIO, is presented by the Central Ohio AFL-CIO to a labor person for outstanding leadership and support of health, welfare and recreation services to the Central Ohio Community; and
 
WHEREAS, this year's recipient, Vester Newsome, Financial Secretary-Treasurer of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers & Grain Millers Local 57, serves his community as a Vietnam Veteran; proud Union Member for 38 years; actively involved with the "One New Toy" Program for 21 years; participated in the Caring & Sharing program to feed the hungry in Cincinnati for the past two years; has been honored with the Vaughn Ball Memorial Scholarship; has been married for 36 years and has two sons and five grandchildren; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby congratulate the recipient of the 2006 George Meany Award, Vester Newsome, whose leadership and voluntary commitment through the labor movement's community services programs have made a significant contribution to the City of Columbus.
