Title
To proclaim Wednesday, July 27, 2005 as "KEEP THE BEAT" day in Columbus, Ohio and as the official "kick-off" for Project HeartSTART.
Body
Whereas, the KEEP THE BEAT campaign is a nationwide outreach and education program designed to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and early defibrillation; and
Whereas, KEEP THE BEAT is being supported by internationally renown singer/songwriter James Taylor during his summer tour, including his concert on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at Germain Amphitheater here in Columbus, to help raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, one of the leading cases of death in the United States; and
Whereas, sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of nearly 1,000 people a day, suddenly and without warning; and
Whereas, only 5% of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive because defibrillation is not available in time; and
Whereas, along with raising awareness for sudden cardiac arrest through concert stops, informational booths and messages, the KEEP THE BEAT campaign is fundraising in order to help local cities implement automated external defibrillators programs in area schools, since on any given day as much as 20% of the child and adult populations combined can be found in United States schools; and
Whereas, the KEEP THE BEAT campaign, supported by Medtronic is not only raising funds to place AEDs in schools, but here locally is the official "Kick-off" for Project HeartSTART, a Columbus-based initiative to improve survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest in our community; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That it hereby proclaims Wednesday, July 27, 2005 as "KEEP THE BEAT" day in Columbus, Ohio and as the official "kick-off" for Project HeartSTART, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be presented to Keith Sullivan, Senior Medtronic Representative for his company's leadership and commitment in fighting sudden cardiac arrest.
