Explanation

The purpose of this legislation is to authorize the Director of Public Utilities to enter into a planned modification of the contract with Duke's Root Control Inc. for Root Control Services for the Division of Sewerage and Drainage, Sewer Maintenance Operations Center. The new expiration of this contract will be December 31, 2011.

The Sewer Maintenance Operations Center utilizes the contract for the application of chemical herbicide to prevent growth of tree roots in sanitary sewer lines 8" to 36" in diameter. This process along with other technology assist in keeping sewer lines clear to avoid possible back-ups within the system. The original contract language allowed for the contract to be extended three (3) additional years on a year to year basis. This is the final extension allowed by the contract.

FISCAL IMPACT: $285,000.00 is needed and budgeted for this service.
