To honor and recognize Police Chief Walter Distelzweig for his 39 years of dedicated service to the City of Columbus on his retirement from the Columbus Division of Police.

WHEREAS, Police Chief Walter Distelzweig joined the Columbus Division of Police on December 3, 1972; and
WHEREAS, since joining the Division of Police in 1972, Chief Distelzweig held assignments in Patrol, Helicopter Unit, Administration, Training and Intelligence; and
WHEREAS, Chief Distelzweig advanced through the ranks in his 40 years of service and was promoted to ranks of Sergeant in 1984, Lieutenant in 1988, Commander in 1992, Deputy Chief in 1998, and to Chief on March 17, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Chief Distelzweig holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Ohio Dominican University and received his Master of Science in Human Resources Administration from Central Michigan University. He also completed more than 20 law enforcement trainings including the FBI National Academy, the Police Executive Leadership College and the Certified Law Enforcement Executive course; and
WHEREAS, as Police Chief, Chief Distelzweig was responsible for more than 1,800 officers dedicated to ensuring that the citizens of Columbus receive the best police protection possible. Throughout the course of his entire career, Chief Distelzweig helped advance the Columbus Division of Police and maintained high standards of excellence; and
WHEREAS, Chief Distelzweig retired on January 13, 2012 after more than 39 years of outstanding service to the citizens of Columbus with the Columbus Division of Police; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this council does hereby recognize, commend, and thank Police Chief Walter Distelzweig for his 39 years of dedicated service to the City of Columbus on his retirement from the Columbus Division of Police on January 13, 2012.
