Explanation
BACKGROUND: The Mayor's Office was recently awarded a grant for a second year to continue funding Columbus’s "Mayors Against Illegal Guns Ohio Regional Coordinator" program. This $60,000.00 grant was awarded by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, from the United Against Illegal Guns Support Fund to help educate both policy makers and the public about the problems of illegal guns and gun trafficking. Pursuant to the grant agreement and memorandum of understanding, the person who was hired in mid- 2010 to coordinate the activities of the program will continue to “play an integral role in the coordination and planning of initiatives, events and media opportunities.” The grant will run for one year, from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012 and will be used for payroll expenses.
As a private grant, these funds must be posted in the accounting system before they can be expended. For this reason, this ordinance must be submitted as an emergency measure.
FISCAL IMPACT: It is anticipated that the grant provided for the aforementioned program will be sufficient for its operation. In the event that it is not, supplemental general fund moneys will be identified from within the Mayor's Office 2012 budget.
