To honor and recognize Steve Shellabarger for his relentless pursuit of equality and devotion to the Central Ohio gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered community, and for his role in the establishment of the Legacy Fund of the Columbus Foundation.
Body
WHEREAS, Steve Shellabarger began his career as an American History teacher at Whitehall-Yearling. During his tenure, he was the President of their local chapter of the Ohio Education Association and nominated for best teacher in 1980; and
WHEREAS, He was one of the early investors in German Village. Steve started buying and restoring properties in the village in 1968, and since then, he has restored fifteen properties in Columbus. Steve also served on the board of the German Village Society and was co-chair of the Village Candlelight Tour; and
WHEREAS, Steve's involvement with GLBT activism began in 1983 when he and a small group of his friends collaborated to raise money for an AIDS awareness television program on Columbus Government Television, Channel 3; and
WHEREAS, As a result of his leadership, local and national media have interviewed and mentioned Steve and his accomplishments, such as The New York Times recognition of his work during the 1992 presidential campaign; and
WHEREAS,Steve Shellabarger has shared his unending energy, strong passion for justice and gracious leadership with The Legacy Fund, Human Rights Campaign, the Columbus AIDS Task Force, and Stonewall Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Steve’s leadership and vision helped create the Legacy Fund of the Columbus Foundation, which enriches the GLBT community by providing financial support for today’s needs and tomorrow’s dreams; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
