Title

To declare September 2012 to be World Alzheimer's Month in Columbus, and to commend the Alzheimer's Association and its Central Ohio chapter for serving the many families who are affected by the disease.

Body

WHEREAS, September 2012 is the Second Annual World Alzheimer's Month, and this year's goal is to acknowledge the plight of families who are quietly and heroically caring for loved ones who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia disease; and

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is a progressive and fatal disease that takes a heavy emotional and financial toll on the families who are affected by it; and

WHEREAS, today, more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, more than fifteen million Americans provide unpaid care for a person with Alzheimer's or other dementias, and care costs are estimated to total approximately $200 billion in 2012; and

WHEREAS, as many as 24,000 Central Ohio families struggle to care for their loved ones who suffer  from a form of dementia disease; and

WHEREAS, in the last thirty minutes, Alzheimer's has cost the United States over eleven million dollars, and twenty-six more Americans have developed the disease; and

WHEREAS, many families suffer quietly with Alzheimer's, and the purpose of the awareness month is to open up a dialogue and make it easier to talk about the disease with friends, neighbors, and coworkers; and

WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association is the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support, and research, and the Central Ohio chapter serves as a care giver and resource in our community while we search for a cure; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

That this Council does hereby declare September 2012 to be World Alzheimer's Month in Columbus, and commends the Alzheimer's Association and its Central Ohio chapter for serving the many families who are affected by the disease.
