To honor and recognize Columbus Public Safety Director Mitchell J. Brown for his many years of service on the occasion of his retirement.

WHEREAS, Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman appointed Mitchell J. Brown as the Director of the Department of Public Safety on April 24, 2000; and
WHEREAS, Director Brown had previously served the public in the roles of Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Registrar for the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles, Public Safety Director for the City of Cleveland, and Commissioner for Emergency Medical Services in Cleveland; and
WHEREAS, as the newly appointed director, Brown immediately put into place new procedures that improved fairness and accountability in the Department of Public Safety; and
WHEREAS, over the past 14 years, Director Brown has implemented policies that have greatly improved relations between the City’s safety personnel and residents, such as bolstering the role of our community liaison officers and emphasizing the effectiveness of community policing; and
WHEREAS, under Director Brown’s leadership, the City of Columbus is one of the safest major metropolitan cities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, through Director Brown’s foresight, Columbus has recognized the importance of technology to help improve the safety of our neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Director Brown made diversity in our safety forces a priority, appointing the first African-American fire chief, Ned Pettus, Jr., and the first female chief of police, Kim Jacobs, as well as working with Mayor Coleman’s office and City Council on diversity recruiting; and
WHEREAS, Director Brown has been a dedicated public servant for nearly four decades, and the City of Columbus has benefitted greatly from his expertise, leadership, work ethic, professionalism, and strength of character; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
