Background

Stop the Summer Slide summer camp is an academic camp that is focused on the Common Core Reading standards for grades K-3 which will help students to continue their learning over the summer. The effects of summer learning differences is a primary cause of widening achievement gaps between students of lower and higher socioeconomic levels. This camp will help students beat the odds, by gaining cumulative summer learning gains.

Stop the Summer Slide, which takes place at Parkmoor Elementary School, will provide help and support to make sure students are on track for reading success by the end of camp for students entering the third grade according to the requirements of Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. In Kindergarten through grade three, stop the summer slide will evaluate all children to determine if they are reading as well as they should be. If a child appears to be falling behind, summer slide will immediately start a reading improvement plan. Children enrolled in the program will be provided breakfast and lunch.

Emergency legislation is required so that the contract can be in place for the beginning of this program on June 15, 2015.
Fiscal Impact
Funding for this ordinance is made available from the city's Jobs Growth Fund 015.
