Explanation
This ordinance authorizes a contract of support in the amount of $10,000.00 between Columbus City Council and the African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative.
In 2004, the African American Male Wellness Walk (AAMWW) was initiated in Columbus, Ohio to raise awareness regarding preventable diseases. The event has brought much needed attention to the poor health outcomes that African American men experience. Overall, men live an average of almost six years less than women, with Native American and African-American men having the lowest overall life expectancy.
AAMWW is a community centered event open to individuals and families from all backgrounds and focuses on offering education, health screenings, and fun healthy activities for adults and children. In 2015, the Columbus event provided over 6,000 screenings and there were nearly 15,000 participants, which made the AAMWW Columbus the largest health event for African Americans in Central Ohio. The 2016 event, having taken place on August 13, was equally successful. Columbus City Council finds it to be an effective use of funds and in the interest of public health to support the development of future AAMWW events in the city.
Fiscal Impact: Funding in the amount of $10,000.00 is available in the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund.
