To Recognize Dr. Stephen A. Douglas , in Honor of his 42 years of Distinguished Service with the Columbus Division of Police

Body

WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Douglas is a native of the near east side of Columbus and alumni of Eastmoor and North High Schools, and The Ohio State University. Dr. Douglas is a veteran of the United States Army, during the Vietnam Conflict. He is a recipient of two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Douglas began his career as an educator at South High School. After receiving his Master’s Degree, he was employed at Columbus Area Mental Health and Southwest Mental Health. Ultimately he earned his PhD in psychology from The Ohio State University in 1976 and was licensed in 1978; and

WHEREAS, In 1975, Dr. Douglas began teaching a class on Behavioral Science to cadets with the Columbus Division of Police. He has been involved in the instruction of every recruit class up until March of 2017 for a total of 72 classes; and

WHEREAS, In 1980, Dr. Douglas developed a partnership with Dr. J. Nick Marzella and began to provide confidential psychotherapy for police officers and their families. He developed Fitness for Duty Evaluations, Critical Incident Debriefings, Law Enforcement Pre-Screenings, and trained officers on effective ways to support their colleagues and families in cases of injury or loss in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Douglas has had a long and successful career in his private practice and as a public speaker, traveling throughout the country. No matter how busy he became he always made time to provide counseling and emotional support to the men and women of the Columbus Division of Police; and

WHEREAS, In his personal life, Dr. Douglas has enjoyed a loving marriage to his wife Dr. Ellen Kay Lyle. The two have two sons, Todd and Mark Douglas, and will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2017.
