Explanation
This ordinance authorizes the Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks to enter into a grant agreement with the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus in support of the Summer Youth Jazz program.

The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) is America’s premier not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to producing, performing, and promoting jazz. Their mission is to advance and celebrate the art of jazz through performance and education. The Jazz Arts Group (JAG) divides its resources among two areas: performance and education.

JAG will partner with the YMCA in the Linden and Hilltop neighborhoods to implement jazz outreach programs for Pre-K, elementary/middle school age, and teens. These programs would be offered in the summer in conjunction with the “Y without Walls” held at the Linden Recreation Center, and the Hilltop YMCA Summer Camp program. Because JAG has a history of working in these neighborhoods and with the YMCA, JAG has a shared vision with the City of Columbus investment in these neighborhoods. An additional community partner will be Transit Arts, a multi-disciplinary arts organization with extensive experience working with teens in Columbus neighborhoods. Below are descriptions of the programs:

Jumpin’ JaKs is a pre-school program which introduces music and encourages creative self-expression and literacy for children aged three to five. This powerful program fuses arts education with codified early childhood educational practices. Each class is run by an experienced music educator, incorporating an exploration of music and instruments, movement, games, story time, and singing songs. Jazz artists provide the children with a live performance and share their musical talent, passion, and expertise.
