To recognize the importance of community engagement, grassroots activism, and local action in the effort to address substance abuse in Columbus during National Recovery Month

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, September is National Recovery Month, an opportunity to educate citizens on behavioral health and reinforce the positive message that substance abuse treatment and mental health services can help individuals realize healthy and rewarding lives; and

 

WHEREAS, Recovery Month is an opportunity to honor and recognize the successes of millions of Americans who have reclaimed their lives through long-term recovery; and

 

WHEREAS, engagement, activism, and action within local communities is a vital component of state and local efforts to address substance abuse in our neighborhoods, an effort that has become more crucial and urgent in the face of the opiate epidemic affecting Columbus and the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus is grateful for the efforts of community leaders like The Reverend Nancy Day-Achauer and community groups like the United Westside Coalition for their work identifying and mobilizing grass roots resources that contribute to the overall effort to address substance abuse through prevention and education programs, naloxone distribution, increasing the availability of stabilization, treatment, and recovery programs, and mental health services; and

 

WHEREAS, recovery is a process that involves various support systems, including treatment and recovery service providers, family, and community; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council recognizes the importance of community engagement, grassroots activism, and local action in the effort to address substance abuse in Columbus during National Recovery Month.
