To commemorate the accomplishments of Janet E. Jackson, and to commend Janet on devoting her career to being a public servant

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson grew up in a rural town in southern Virginia, before relocating to Ohio;

 

WHEREAS, Janet attended Wittenberg University and received a Bachelor’s degree, in 1975. Next, she earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the National Law Center at George Washington University;

 

WHEREAS, In 1987 Gov. Richard F. Celeste appointed her to fill a vacancy on the Franklin County Municipal Court.  She was subsequently elected and then re-elected, serving nearly ten years.  From that position she moved to another elective position, that of Columbus City Attorney where she served six years, becoming the first female to hold that job;

 

WHEREAS, Janet E. Jackson became the first woman and first African American to lead the United Way of Central Ohio, after serving for nearly 15 years.  Under her leadership the United Way mobilized the central Ohio community to reduce poverty;

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame; a YWCA Woman of Achievement; recipient of the Columbus Education Association’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award: Mortar Board Alumni Achievement Award; Board member of The Center for Family Safety and Healing; a member of the Columbus Education Commission; and a member of the International Women’s Forum and IWF Ohio; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:  That this Council does hereby congratulate Janet E. Jackson on her years of service and his contributions to the City of Columbus. We wish you the best during your retirement.
