To congratulate Bexley High School and the Bexley Sleep Out for receiving the 2018 Youth Services Award.

 

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards Banquet, the largest labor recognition of its kind in the country is a night for the Central Ohio AFL-CIO and the United Way Community Services Department to recognize local business and labor leaders who have given outstanding volunteer service to the community; and

 

WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards, named after the late George Meany, former President of the national AFL-CIO, are presented by the Central Ohio AFL-CIO to a labor person for outstanding leadership and support of health, welfare and recreation services to the Central Ohio Community; and

 

WHEREAS,  the Bexley Sleep Out began during the 2014-2015 school year when a student voiced a vision for raising money for local homeless shelters. Student’s ran a non-profit out of Anna Shottenstein’s classroom and eventually the first ever Bexley Sleep out was held; and

 

WHEREAS,  for four years the Sleep Out has been held annually and the event has raised over $10,000 for local homeless shelters. The event also donates much needed items in addition to the fundraising; and 

 

WHEREAS,  the Sleep Out has over 200 annual participants including local business owners, and politicians, and this year the proceeds will be donated to the Huckleberry House which will be hosting its very own city wide sleep out in the Spring; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

That we hereby congratulate Bexley High School and the Bexley Sleep Out for receiving the 2018 Youth Services Award.
