To congratulate Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady as the 2018 Community Service Award recipient.

Body

WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards Banquet, the largest labor recognition of its kind in the country is a night for the Central Ohio AFL-CIO and the United Way Community Services Department to recognize local business and labor leaders who have given outstanding volunteer service to the community; and

WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards, named after the late George Meany, former President of the national AFL-CIO, are presented by the Central Ohio AFL-CIO to a labor person for outstanding leadership and support of health, welfare and recreation services to the Central Ohio Community; and

WHEREAS, John was first elected to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners in 2008 and since then he has assumed a leadership roles on multiple economic development initiatives; and

WHEREAS, John has made is a priority to bolster local food systems in order to improve health and well-being of residents and also to create sustainable jobs. Under his leadership the City of Columbus has partnered with Local Matters to create a Franklin County Local Food Action Plan that guides the community towards stronger, more sustainable food systems; and

WHEREAS, John has made his life about service and has been in leadership position on multiple committees and boards throughout his career which include the Greater Columbus Infant Mortality Task Force, the Franklin County Opiate Action Plan, the Franklin County Youth Needs Assessments, and the Somali Work Group which he helped establish; and

WHEREAS, John’s leadership and dedication is invaluable to the residents of Central Ohio and Ohio in a greater sense. He has committed his life to the service of others and his actions and initiatives have gone on to greatly improve the lives of Ohioans; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
