WHEREAS, Katie Smith was born and raised in Logan, Ohio, and quickly established herself as one of the best basketball players in the country, earning recognition as the Gatorade National Player of the Year during her senior year of high school before attending The Ohio State University, where she continued to earn accolades, including Big Ten Player of the Year in 1996 on her way to breaking the Big Ten scoring record; and

WHEREAS, Katie Smith won three Olympic gold medals as a member of the United States women’s national basketball team and played 17 seasons of professional basketball, including 15 seasons with the WNBA, where she won two WNBA championships in 2006 and 2008, was recognized as the WNBA Finals MVP in 2008, led the league in scoring in 2001, was a seven-time WNBA All-Star, and was recognized as one of the top 15 all-time WNBA players in 2011; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her accomplishments, Katie Smith was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, became the first female Buckeye athlete to have her number retired the same year, and was chosen as a member of the 2018 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame class; and

WHEREAS, as a board member of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission, Katie Smith was instrumental in the City of Columbus’ successful bid to host the 2018 NCAA Women’s Final Four; and

WHEREAS, through the generous giving of her time and efforts, Katie Smith has acted as an ambassador for the City of Columbus and The Ohio State University and has become the face of the 2018 NCAA Women’s Final Four she helped bring to the city; and

WHEREAS, as one of the most decorated players in the history of women’s basketball who continues to volunteer her time and give back to the community, Katie Smith serves as a role model and inspiration to women in Columbus and throughout the country; n...
