Title

To Recognize and Honor the Lord Denney’s Players for the First Modern Performance of Shakespeare’s Quarto Text of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Body

WHEREAS, the Lord Denney’s Players are the theatrical arm of the Ohio State University Department of English and have been in existence since 2014 and provide an opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to engage in intensive experiential leraning and research around the annual production of a play or series of plays;  and

WHEREAS, Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is well known, but an early version of the play has not been performed since the early seventeenth century and has never been staged as a complete production; and

WHEREAS, many are familiar with the play as a text from the First Folio, scholars argue that a shorter version, known as the First Quarto, was Shakespeare’s initial draft of the play; and

WHEREAS, by producing the first performance of the briefer text, Lord Denney’s Players contribute uniquely to Shakespearean academia and scholarship, drawing internationally renowned scholars to Columbus to witness the historic production; and

WHEREAS, productions like these contribute to the culture and academic climate in Columbus, which makes our city a great place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

That this Council does hereby recognize and honor the Lord Denney’s Players on their performance and production of Shakespeare’s Quarto text of The Merry Wives of Windsor on this day, March 26th, 2018.
