To Honor Our First Responders for Bringing Help and Bringing Hope through a Week of Appreciation on April 9-15, 2018.

WHEREAS, in Franklin County, during Calendar year 2017, there have been 520 unintentional overdose deaths and in the nation, everyday 174 individuals die from overdoses; and
WHEREAS, every day, our first responders including EMS, Fire, and Police, unconditionally respond to calls for help including overdoses due to opioids and other drugs; and
WHEREAS, Columbus City Council expresses our gratitude and appreciation to all community members working on the front lines in the fight against Ohio’s opioid epidemic; and
WHEREAS, in the matter of expressing our appreciation to our first responders in Bringing Help and Bringing Hope to others in Franklin County, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, in partnership with our fellow Columbus City and Franklin County agencies, we will reinforce efforts to prevent and treat addiction as outlined in the Franklin County Opiate Action Plan, including opioids; educate youth and adults about addiction and recovery; promote family building and workforce development as ways of combatting the effect of addiction on communities; and encourage community engagement in efforts to address this present opioid epidemic; and
WHEREAS, through this work, we will continue to bring hope to our community and build the understanding that treatment works and people recover; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this council does hereby express our gratitude during the April 9-15, 2018 Week of Appreciation and pledge our support for first responders who are bringing help and bringing hope by saving lives, providing treatment access, assisting families, and supporting recovery in Franklin County, Ohio.
