To Recognize and Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Young Scholars Program at The Ohio State University

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, the Office of the President in collaboration with the formerly Office of Minority Affairs initiated the Young Scholars Program in 1988 to increase diversity at The Ohio State University; and

 

WHEREAS, the Young Scholars Program recruits pre-college, academically talented, low-income, first-generation students from nine of the largest urban school districts in Ohio: Akron Public Schools, Canton City Schools, Cincinnati Public Schools, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Columbus City Schools, Dayton Public Schools, Lorain City Schools, Toledo Public Schools and Youngstown City Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, currently, the Young Scholars Program serves over 1,000 students state-wide, including more than 700 in grades 8-12 and 350 undergraduate students, engaging in holistic support programs focused on academic achievement, college access and completion; and

 

WHEREAS, the Young Scholars Program participants who complete a rigorous high school college-preparatory curriculum and maintain a 3.3 grade point average and are accepted at Ohio State’s Columbus campus are eligible to receive a financial-aid package that meets 100 percent of demonstrated need; and

 

WHEREAS, in 30 years, the Young Scholars Program of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion has worked with more than 3,000 pre-collegiate students and graduated over 1,000 collegiate students whose participation has supported their earning a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and who add value as educated, engaged citizens who contribute to their communities in Columbus, statewide and beyond; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:  That this Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Young Scholars Program at The Ohio State University.
