To recognize November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Columbus.

Body

WHEREAS, Columbus City Council is dedicated to informing and helping people living with lung cancer or people who are at risk for the disease; and

WHEREAS, Lung cancer takes more lives annually than breast, prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancers combined, making the research for an early diagnostic test all the more important to help save lives - in fact, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the United States; and

WHEREAS, there is currently no standard screening for lung cancer, and funding for lung cancer research falls far short of that for other forms of cancer - this year in Franklin County, over 700 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer and nearly 600 people will die from the disease; and

WHEREAS, each year, about 218,000 people in the United States are told they have lung cancer and more than 150,000 people die from this disease - moreover in the United States, about 7,300 people who have never smoked die from lung cancer due to secondhand smoke exposure every year; and

WHEREAS, Different people have different symptoms for lung cancer - Most people with lung cancer don’t have symptoms until the cancer is advanced - Health care providers and state and local communities can play important roles in helping people to lower their lung cancer risk; and
WHEREAS, approximately two-thirds of the people who have never smoked and are diagnosed with lung cancer are women - moreover, women who have never smoked are more than twice as likely to get lung cancer as men who have never smoked - further, recent studies have indicated that the rate of people who have never-smoked and contract lung cancer is increasing; and

WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for women with lung cancer remains at an all-time low; now therefore,
