To endorse Issue 21, the Columbus State Community College Bond Issue, on the March 17th, 2020 ballot


Body

WHEREAS, Columbus State Community College provides education to prepare students for good jobs, earning affordable credentials and degrees, and acquiring the skills local employers need; and
WHEREAS, Columbus State Community College affordably educates more than 45,000 students each year with 75% of alumni working in the region and playing a vital role in health care, information technology, science, engineering, business, advanced manufacturing, public safety, and other fields that lead to good jobs; and
WHEREAS, over the past ten years, State capital appropriations to Columbus State Community College have averaged less than $5 million per year, while also spending an average of $4.5 million each year to address necessary capital needs - funds that otherwise could have been spent on academic and student success programs; and
WHEREAS, the State does not have the resources to cover the vast amount of higher education capital needs, the College will be forced to use educational resources to address capital needs at the expense of students, area employers, and the economic vitality of our region; and
WHEREAS, the bond will modernize and improve 200 classrooms and labs, add new training technology and educational equipment, repair deteriorating roofs, plumbing, windows, ventilation, elevator, electrical and security systems, parking and sidewalks, and add a new academic building with state-of-the-art facilities, labs and technology; and
WHEREAS, a request has been made for a 24 year bond issue of an estimated 0.65 mill to generate an estimated $300 million for capital improvements on the March 2020 ballot that will cost individual homeowners less than $2 per month per $100,000 of property valuation; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council hereby endorses the Columbus State Community College bond is...
