Explanation
This ordinance authorizes Columbus City Council to enter into a grant agreement with Columbus Historical Society in support of their acquisition and renovation of the property at 540 West Broad Street.

The aforementioned property is a firehouse originally constructed in 1892, and ceased operating as a firehouse in 1966. The building has served a variety of functions since but has been long-vacant. In partnership with Heritage Ohio, a historic preservation group, the Columbus Historical Society will purchase the building, where it will serve as the organization’s permanent home and exhibition site.

Fiscal Impact: Funding is available within the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund.

Emergency action is requested in order to avoid any delay in providing the Columbus Historical Society with the funding necessary to execute the transaction.

WHEREAS, the property at 540 West Broad Street was originally constructed in 1892 as a firehouse; and

WHEREAS, the property has been long-vacant and in need of preservation; and

WHEREAS, the Columbus Historical Society, in partnership with Heritage Ohio, intends to purchase and renovate the property in order to serve as the Society’s permanent home and exhibition site; and

WHEREAS, an emergency exists in the usual daily operation of the City in that it is immediately necessary to authorize City Council to enter into a grant agreement with Columbus Historical Society in order to avoid any delay in providing the funding necessary to execute the transaction, for the preservation of the public health, safety and welfare; now, therefore,

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS...
