To Recognize and Celebrate July 1st as the Independence Day of Somalia in the City of Columbus.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Independence Day of Somalia is a national holiday observed annually in Somalia on July 1st; and

 

WHEREAS, the date celebrates the unification of the Trust Territory of Somalia (former Italian Somalia) and the State of Somaliland on July 1, 1960 which formed the Somali Republic; and

 

WHEREAS, it is a day that honors the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalis worldwide, and inspires a sense of gratitude and patriotism; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus has proudly welcomed an estimated 60,000 Somali migrants, forming the second largest Somali population in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, the Somali community has undertaken great entrepreneurial spirit, not only to create economic opportunities for Columbus, but also to strengthen the cultural fabric; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:  That this Council does hereby recognize and celebrate July 1st, 2021 as the Independence Day of Somalia in the City of Columbus.
