Explanation
BACKGROUND: Columbus Public Health has been awarded a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation. This ordinance is needed to accept and appropriate $32,950.00 in grant money to fund the Safe Routes to School Program for the period July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2023.
The Safe Routes to School Program will provide safety education for elementary and middle school students. This program encourages and enables children to walk or bike to school, positively impacting health, reducing traffic congestion, enhancing a sense of community and improving safety.
This ordinance is submitted as an emergency so as to allow the financial transaction to be posted in the City’s accounting system as soon as possible due to the grant start period of July 1, 2021.
FISCAL IMPACT: The program is fully funded ($32,950.00) by the Ohio Department of Transportation and does not generate revenue or require a city match.

To authorize and direct the Board of Health to accept a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation for the Safe Routes to School Program in the amount of $32,950.00; to authorize the appropriation of $32,950.00 in the Health Department Grants Fund; and to declare an emergency. ($32,950.00)

WHEREAS, $32,950.00 in grant funds have been made available to Columbus Public Health through the Ohio Department of Transportation for the Safe Routes to School Program; and,
WHEREAS, it is necessary to accept this grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation, and to appropriate these funds to the Health Department for the preservation of the public health, peace, property, safety, and welfare; and,
