To Recognize the 20th Anniversary of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks and Express Appreciation for Members of the US Armed Forces

WHEREAS, The terror attacks on the twin towers of The World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and the crash landing of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania accounted for nearly 3,000 lives lost; and
WHEREAS, On the 20th anniversary of that fateful day, we not only remember the fallen, but the first responders and everyday heroes that risked their own lives to save others; and
WHEREAS, We express our appreciation for those who have served in our armed forces during the US War in Afghanistan. We owe them our gratitude and respect for their service and sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, We remember those lost in the August 26 terrorist attack on the Kabul Airport, including 13 American service members and 169 Afghan citizens. Specifically, we’d like to acknowledge the loss of Maxton Soviak from Berlin Heights Ohio. May his family have peace; and
WHEREAS, As the veterans of the US War in Afghanistan return home, may we as a community welcome them with open arms and grateful hearts; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby honor the memory of the victims of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, recognizes the commitment of first responders for their actions on that fateful day, and express our appreciation to our military service members for their sacrifice.
