Explanation

BACKGROUND:

The purpose of this ordinance is to appropriate $81,250.00 to the Department of Public Safety, on behalf of the Division of Police, for purchase of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be carried in police vehicles in the event of medical emergencies among residents or division personnel.

In 2017, Council provided funding for thirty-six (36) AEDs to be carried in Division of Police cruisers. These would then be available if officers were the first on the scene to a cardiac arrest or similar medical emergency. In order to continue to enhance the Division’s ability to protect the public, as well as fellow personnel, this ordinance will provide funding for an additional fifty (50) AEDs, pads, batteries, and cases.

This ordinance will appropriate $81,250.00 within the Reimagine Safety subfund.

FISCAL IMPACT: Total appropriation is $81,250.00 and is available in the 2021 budget within the Reimagine Safety subfund, Fund 1000-100019.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION: Emergency action is requested in order to immediately provide additional AEDs in Division of Police vehicles for the safety, health, and welfare of the residents of Columbus.
