Explanation

This ordinance authorizes the City Clerk to enter into a grant agreement with Somali Community Link Inc., a non-profit entity, in support of the organization’s After School Program.

 

Somali Community Link Inc. is a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of Somali refugees and immigrants in advocacy, education, employment, and housing needs in Central Ohio.

 

The After School program is at 2775 Cleveland Ave, and is strategically positioned in the heart of Linden, to provide easy access for children in need. The program aims to provide academic support and mentorship to underprivileged students, offering a range of services including homework assistance, access to computers and printers, and personalized tutoring sessions focused on core subjects.

 

The goals of the program are to:

● Improve academic performance and grades among participating students.

● Enhance confidence and motivation towards learning.

● Strengthen mentorship relationships between tutors, students, and parents.

● Increase access to educational resources and support services.

● Develop essential study skills and academic strategies.

● Establish safe and supportive learning environment for children.

 

Fiscal Impact: Funding is available within the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund.

 

Title

To authorize the City Clerk to enter into a grant agreement with the Somali Community Link Inc. in support of their After School Program; and to authorize an appropriation and expenditure within the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund. ($100,000.00)

 

Body

WHEREAS, Somali Community Link Inc. is a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of Somali refugees and immigrants in advocacy, education, employment, and housing needs in Central Ohio; and

 

WHEREAS, The After School program is strategically positioned in the heart of Linden, to provide easy access for children in need; and

 

WHEREAS, The After School program will work to improve academic performance and grades among participating students; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

 

SECTION 1. That the City Clerk is authorized to enter into a grant agreement with the not-for-profit Somali Community Link Inc. in support of their After School Program.

 

SECTION 2. That the appropriation and expenditure of $100,000.00, or so much thereof as may be needed pursuant to the action authorized in SECTION 1, is authorized in the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund, fund 1000, subfund 100018, per the accounting codes in the attachment to this ordinance.

 

SECTION 3. That the funds necessary to carry out the purpose of this ordinance are deemed appropriated, and the City Auditor shall establish such accounting codes as necessary.

 

SECTION 4. That the City Auditor is authorized to make any accounting changes to revise the funding source for all contracts or contract modifications associated with this ordinance.

 

SECTION 5. That this ordinance will take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
