Explanation

This ordinance authorizes the City Clerk to enter into a grant agreement with the Discovery District Development Corporation dba the Discovery District Civic Association, a non-profit entity, in support of their Lafayette Mural Alley project.

The Discovery District is a special improvement district in downtown Columbus and is the home of Columbus State Community College, Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus Museum of Art, and Columbus Metropolitan Library. The Discovery District Civic Association promotes and enhances the experience of those that live, work and visit the Discovery District.

The Discovery District Civic Association has begun a major public art project called the Lafayette Mural Alley Project. They reached out to property owners on a 4 block stretch of Lafayette Alley between Spring and Long to ask their permission to paint murals on their buildings. Over 150 artists submitted applications to paint and a selection of 35 artists from different artistic backgrounds, social and cultural demographics, and neighborhood and city locations has been made. The project will showcase the vast talent of public artists from the various neighborhoods of Columbus, introduce national artists to the community, and enhance the experience in the Discovery District by creating a major collection of public artworks.

Fiscal Impact: Funding is available within the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund.
