To Celebrate and Recognize the Life of Maida Rafaela Barroso

WHEREAS, born on January 4, 1940, to Lorenzo Rosquet and Maria de Jesus Gonzalez, Maida’s life was defined by unwavering faith, deep love for family, and a dedication to service; and
WHEREAS, in 1970, Maida and her husband, Cirilo “Barroso” Barroso, came to America with their two daughters, later welcoming their third. They established their home on the East Side of Columbus, where they built a 50-year legacy of service to the Latino community; and
WHEREAS, Maida spent her career at Roxanne Labs, co-founded the Spanish-American Social Club, and, alongside her husband, opened Columbus’ first Latino food store, Tropical Food Market. She also volunteered for Columbus City Schools, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Santa Cruz Church, serving as a leader and mentor; and
WHEREAS, a devoted member of Parroquia Santa Cruz for over 40 years, Maida taught Sunday school, volunteered at mass, and was honored as Catholic Woman of the Year for the Diocese of Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Maida was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, never missing a milestone in the lives of her loved ones. Known for her cooking, sewing, gardening, and storytelling, she enriched the lives of many with her warmth and wisdom; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby celebrate and recognize the life of Maida Rafaela Barroso, honoring her profound contributions to family, faith, and the Latino community. Her unwavering commitment to community advocacy, mentorship, and civic engagement will forever be remembered, ensuring that his legacy of excellence and service endures for generations to come.
